Postoperative Edema Resolution following Rhinoplasty: A Three-Dimensional Morphometric Assessment

Overview

Surgeons routinely tell patients that swelling hides the final result for months, but the authors note no objective evidence supported that estimate. This retrospective study used three-dimensional imaging to measure nasal volume repeatedly over the first year after primary open rhinoplasty and fit a curve to the decline.

What it means for a patient

• Most of the visible swelling is gone in the first month, but the last few percent takes the rest of the year.
• The final nose settles at roughly 84 percent of the volume seen at the first postoperative visit.
• Baseline was measured 1 to 2 weeks after surgery, so swelling present in the first days is not captured.
• Limits: 40 patients, retrospective, one imaging system, pooled data rather than individual curves, and only primary open rhinoplasty without cleft or revision cases.

Why this paper matters

The advice to wait a year before judging a result had been convention rather than measurement, and this puts numbers on it. The curve is pooled across patients, so it does not show how much individual timelines vary, particularly with thick skin.
