What the literature says
Synthesised from the abstracts of the 40 papers listed under Start here. Every line carries the PubMed ID it rests on.
Two-sentence lead. Rhinoplasty results are now scored with patient-reported instruments (SCHNOS, NOSE, VAS, ROE, FACE-Q) but no single validated tool covers both appearance and breathing; a Rasch crosswalk now converts NOSE to SCHNOS-O, Dutch population norms exist for four aesthetic scales, and a new 25-item scale measures the distress of first seeing the nose after cast removal. About 30% of Asian rhinoplasty candidates screen positive for body dysmorphic disorder, positive screens resolved in 83% after surgery in one cohort, litigating patients score lower on body-image and self-esteem scales, and technique matched to the patient's anatomy tracks with higher satisfaction and fewer revisions.
Key points

- Body dysmorphia screening (BDDQ-AS) before and after rhinoplasty, 115 patients (88% female): 83% of positive screens resolved after surgery; positive screens before and after correlated with worse aesthetic satisfaction (P<.002); no PROM predicted who would resolve [38452148]
- Malpractice claims after rhinoplasty, 55 litigants vs 85 controls (Level 3): litigants older (P=.002), less educated, more often operated by specialists rather than professors (P<.001) in private hospitals (P=.010); more somatization (P=.019); lower body-image quality of life, appearance satisfaction and self-esteem (all P<.05); low BIQLI and specialist-level surgery predicted litigation [41419223]

What is still contested or missing
- No validated PROM captures both aesthetic and functional rhinoplasty outcomes; FACE-Q omits breathing [41071223]
- BDD prevalence halves depending on diagnostic tool; standardized protocols lacking [40907540]
- DPR's early cosmetic advantage is "associative rather than causal" [42053436]
- Triamcinolone evidence is limited and needs RCTs [38519572]; fresh frozen rib has one controlled study [38528125]; commentaries [41225218, 38977451] are title-only on file [38519572, 38528125, 41225218, 38977451]
- Population norms are Dutch and online-panel based; non-Western respondents score lower, which complicates cross-national benchmarks [42670247]
- BDD screen resolution after surgery (83%) comes from one surgeon's 115 patients and conflicts with the traditional view that BDD predicts dissatisfaction [38452148]
- Litigation predictors derive from 55 forensic referrals in one country; surgeon rank and hospital type may proxy for case mix [41419223]
- MEADS-25 is newly validated and has no outcome data yet [42424527]
- Tip-graft literature reports patient-reported outcomes in 27.3% of studies [36723630]
